Use of Land

Over fifteen years ago I photographed around Ashton Moss, an area in Greater Manchester, where new road systems were being put in to allow access to out of town shopping, in particular to a large Ikea store that has just been built.
This new infrastructure was erasing the last traces of the market gardens that had once surrounded Manchester, providing the city with fresh produce. Only one remained at the time and it was in the process of closing down.
Land usage, loss of prime agricultural land, transport costs, the difficulties of importing fresh food from Europe, especially Spain with its acres of polytunnels and slave labour conditions and the future of our small market garden here in Wales all fed into my reaction in these works on paper. I show them from the most recent to their starting point so the development is shown in reverse.
